Production motorcycle

A production motorcycle is a model built in series and sold to the public, as opposed to a prototype or one-off racing bike.

A production motorcycle is a model the manufacturer builds in series and sells to the general public through dealers. It meets road or competition homologation requirements and comes with a parts supply, service manual and warranty.

The term matters in racing. Production-based classes such as Superbike, Supersport and Superstock use bikes derived from road models, and rules usually require a minimum number to be built and sold. Prototype classes such as MotoGP use bikes built only for racing.

For buyers, production models offer easy parts availability and known service intervals. Limited-edition or homologation-special models can be valuable, but parts may be harder to find.
