UTV (side-by-side)

A UTV, or side-by-side, is a steering-wheel off-road vehicle where driver and passenger sit next to each other inside a roll cage.

A UTV (utility task vehicle), or side-by-side, is an off-road vehicle where driver and passenger sit next to each other, as in a car. Unlike an ATV it has a steering wheel, pedals, seat belts and a roll-over protection structure (ROPS), often with a cargo bed.

There are two main kinds: utility machines built to carry loads and tow on farms, in forests and on building sites, and sport models with long-travel suspension and powerful engines. Most use a CVT, selectable four-wheel drive and sometimes a differential lock.

Because a UTV is heavy and tall, safety depends on wearing the belts, keeping hands and feet inside and taking care on slopes. Registration and licence requirements depend on the vehicle type and country – check with your local authority.
