Privateer

A privateer is a racer without full factory backing who funds, prepares and often transports their own bike.

A privateer is a rider who races without the full financial and technical support of a manufacturer's factory team. Privateers buy their own bikes and parts, often prepare them themselves or with a small team and cover travel costs through personal funds and small sponsors.

Some receive limited help, such as discounted parts or a support programme, but they lack the factory team's development parts, staff and testing. Results achieved as a privateer are therefore highly respected, and many top riders started that way.

Almost every amateur and club racer in motocross, enduro and road racing is a privateer. Good preparation, a reliable bike and smart spending on tyres, suspension setup and training matter more than expensive tuning parts.
