Off-road helmet (motocross helmet)

An off-road helmet has a long chin bar and a sun peak but no face shield; it is worn with goggles.

An off-road helmet, or motocross helmet, has a protruding chin bar, a large eye port and a peak that shades the eyes and deflects roost and branches. Instead of a visor it is worn with goggles, which seal better against dust and mud and allow good ventilation when breathing hard.

The shape gives plenty of airflow at low speed, but the peak catches wind on the road, so dual-sport or adventure helmets combine a peak with a visor for mixed riding.

Choose a helmet with ECE 22.06 approval, a snug fit with no pressure points and goggles that fit the eye port. Replace a helmet after any significant impact or after about five years of use, as the liner degrades.
