Open-face helmet (jet helmet)

An open-face helmet covers the top, back and sides of the head but has no chin bar, leaving the face exposed.

An open-face helmet, also called a jet or 3/4 helmet, protects the top, back and sides of the head and the ears, but has no chin bar. Many have a visor or a short peak. They are popular on scooters, cruisers, classics and for slow city riding because they are light, airy and give a wide view.

The trade-off is protection: crash studies show the chin and jaw area takes a large share of impacts in motorcycle crashes, and an open-face helmet leaves it unprotected. Wind, insects and rain also hit the face directly.

If you choose one, make sure it is ECE 22.06 approved, use a visor or good glasses, and consider a modular (flip-up) helmet if you want an open feel with a chin bar when needed.
