Body Armour (Protectors)

Body armour are impact protectors in riding gear for shoulders, elbows, knees, hips and back. CE levels 1 and 2 explained.

Body armour means the impact protectors built into or worn under motorcycle clothing. They sit at the shoulders, elbows, hips, knees and back, and sometimes the chest, and spread and absorb the force of a blow in a crash.

In Europe, limb protectors are tested to EN 1621-1 and back protectors to EN 1621-2, with Level 2 passing less force through than Level 1. Chest protectors have their own standard, EN 1621-3. Modern soft armour stays flexible in normal use and stiffens on impact; off-road riders often wear a separate roost deflector or protection jacket.

Armour only works if it stays in place, so check that it covers the joint when you are in riding position. Replace protectors after a serious crash and follow the maker's guidance on lifespan.
