Panniers (saddlebags)

Panniers are luggage cases or bags mounted on each side of the rear wheel to carry gear on tours.

Panniers, called saddlebags especially in the USA, are luggage mounted on both sides of the rear wheel. They come as hard cases made of aluminium or plastic, often lockable and waterproof, or soft bags of textile or leather that are lighter and cheaper.

Hard panniers need a bike-specific rack. Soft panniers are often thrown over the seat or fitted to simple side frames that keep them clear of the wheel and exhaust. On adventure bikes many riders prefer soft luggage because it survives a fall better and is less likely to trap a leg.

Pack heavy items low and forward, keep weight even on both sides and respect the maximum load given by the rack and bike makers. Check tyre pressures and adjust rear preload when riding loaded.
