Back protector

A back protector shields the spine in a crash; motorcycle back protectors are certified to EN 1621-2 at Level 1 or Level 2.

A back protector absorbs impact in a crash and protects the spine. There are two kinds: an insert that slips into a pocket in the jacket, and a standalone protector worn with straps or as a vest, which usually covers a larger area.

In Europe motorcycle back protectors are certified to EN 1621-2. Level 2 lets less impact energy through than Level 1, so it protects better – and modern Level 2 protectors are thin and flexible. Many jackets ship with just a foam pad in the back pocket, so check that a real certified protector is fitted.

The protector should cover the spine from the shoulders to the waist and stay in place in the riding position. Off-road riders often use a combined chest and back protector (body armour).
