Lane Splitting (Filtering)

Lane splitting means riding between lanes of slow or stationary traffic; whether it is legal depends on the country.

Lane splitting, often called filtering in the UK, means riding a motorcycle between lanes of vehicles that are moving slowly or stopped, for example in a queue at traffic lights or in a traffic jam. Some definitions separate filtering past stationary traffic from splitting lanes at higher speeds.

The rules differ widely between countries: some explicitly allow it under conditions, some tolerate it and others forbid it. Always check the traffic law of the country you ride in.

Where it is allowed, keep the speed difference to traffic small, watch for cars changing lanes or doors opening, be especially careful near junctions and do not filter between large vehicles. Mirrors and bar ends need clearance, so wide luggage makes it harder.
