Fishtailing

Fishtailing is when the rear wheel slides from side to side, usually from too much throttle on a slippery surface or a locked rear brake.

Fishtailing means the rear of the motorcycle swings left and right like a fish's tail. It usually happens when the rear tyre loses grip under hard acceleration on wet, loose or icy surfaces, or when the rear brake locks and the wheel starts to slide.

Off-road, a little fishtailing in sand or mud is normal and controllable by standing up and keeping steady throttle. On tarmac, a big slide can lead to a highside if the tyre suddenly regains grip.

  • Under acceleration: ease the throttle smoothly – don't snap it shut.
  • Under braking: release the rear brake a little to let the wheel roll again.
  • Look ahead and keep the handlebars relaxed. Traction control and ABS help prevent it.
