Escape Route (Riding)

An escape route is a way out you pick before entering tricky terrain or traffic, so you can avoid a hazard if things go wrong.

An escape route is an alternative line or safe exit you identify before committing to a difficult section: a steep climb, a river crossing, a rocky descent, or a busy junction on the road. If the bike loses traction, the line is blocked or someone pulls out, you already know where to go.

Off-road, that might be a flatter spot to turn around on a hill climb, or a bailout line around a big step. On the road, it means leaving space in traffic – not riding boxed in, keeping a gap to the vehicle ahead and noticing open shoulders or side roads.

Make it a habit: before each challenge, look, plan your main line and your way out. It reduces panic and helps you make calm decisions.
