Iron Butt (Iron Butt Association)

The Iron Butt Association certifies long-distance rides such as the SaddleSore 1000: 1,000 miles (about 1,600 km) in 24 hours.

The Iron Butt Association (IBA) is a US-based organisation for long-distance motorcyclists. It certifies endurance rides, the best known being the SaddleSore 1000: 1,000 miles, about 1,610 km, within 24 hours. Riders document their ride with fuel receipts, GPS tracks and witness forms, and riders from Europe and elsewhere take part too.

The Iron Butt Rally itself is a separate, much tougher event: a multi-day competition across North America in which riders collect bonus locations over roughly 11 days.

Long-distance riding is about planning and fatigue management rather than speed. Plan fuel stops, stay hydrated, take short breaks and stop immediately if you feel drowsy.
