Sweep rider (tail gunner)

The sweep is the experienced rider at the back of a group ride who watches the group and helps anyone who stops or has a problem.

The sweep, also called tail gunner, back door or ride lieutenant, is the last rider in a group ride. It is usually an experienced rider with a good view of the whole group, a first-aid kit, basic tools and often a radio or phone link to the leader.

The sweep's jobs are to make sure nobody is left behind, stop with any rider who has a breakdown or falls, and help the group change lanes by moving out first to secure space for those ahead.

Many groups give the sweep a high-visibility vest so others can easily see when the whole group has passed.
