Formation Riding (Group Ride)

Formation riding is riding in a group in fixed positions, usually staggered, so riders keep safe gaps and stay together.

In a formation ride, every rider has a set place in the group and keeps it. The usual pattern on straight roads is a staggered formation: the leader rides on one side of the lane, the next rider on the other side about a second or two behind, and so on. This keeps a safe braking distance while keeping the group compact.

In corners, on narrow roads and in poor visibility, riders switch to single file and leave more space. A lead rider sets the pace and route, and an experienced rider at the back (sweep) helps anyone who stops.

  • Agree on hand signals, route and stops before leaving.
  • Put less experienced riders behind the leader.
  • Ride your own ride – never follow the group faster than you are comfortable.
