Whip (jump trick)

A whip is a motocross jump style where the rider kicks the rear of the bike sideways in mid-air and straightens it before landing.

A whip is a jumping technique and trick in motocross and freestyle. Shortly after take-off the rider turns the handlebars and uses body and legs to push the rear of the bike out to one side, so the bike lies sideways in the air, like a whipping tail. Before landing, the rider brings the bike back in line with the direction of travel.

Small whips are also practical: racers use them to keep the bike low on jumps and to correct the bike's line in the air. Big, flat whips are mainly for show and photos.

Learn whips only once you jump confidently, starting with small movements on a familiar, smooth tabletop. Landing with the bike still sideways is a common cause of crashes, so always straighten in time.
