Rear wheel drift

A rear wheel drift is a controlled sideways slide of the rear tyre in a corner while the front tyre keeps grip.

A rear wheel drift is when the rear tyre slides sideways through a corner while the front keeps tracking its line. It can be provoked with throttle (power slide) or with the rear brake when entering a turn, and is a basic skill in flat track, supermoto, enduro and motocross.

On loose surfaces a small drift helps turn the bike and point it out of the corner. On tarmac it requires much more skill, as grip can return suddenly and cause a highside.

Learn sliding on gravel, grass or a dirt oval at low speed with full protective gear. Keep your eyes on the exit, weight on the outside peg and the throttle smooth.
