Full-Lock Turn

A full-lock turn is a tight low-speed turn with the handlebars at the steering stop, controlled with clutch, throttle, rear brake and balance.

A full-lock turn is the tightest turn a motorcycle can make, with the handlebars turned all the way to the steering stop. It is needed for U-turns on narrow roads, in car parks and on trails, and is part of motorcycle licence tests in many European countries.

  • Keep the clutch in the friction zone and a steady, slightly raised idle.
  • Use light rear brake to control speed and stabilise the bike – avoid the front brake at full lock, as it can make the bike fall.
  • Turn your head and look over your shoulder to where you want to finish.
  • Lean the bike into the turn while keeping your body more upright, counterweighting.

Practise both directions regularly in an empty car park; most riders have a weaker side.
