Static balance

Static balance is keeping a motorcycle upright while stopped or nearly stopped using small body and steering inputs, as in trials track stands.

Static balance is the ability to keep a motorcycle upright when it is stationary or barely moving, without putting a foot down. Trials riders use it constantly, and road riders benefit when waiting in traffic, in tight manoeuvres or on uneven ground.

It relies on small corrections: turning the bars, moving the knees and hips, and very light use of the clutch and rear brake to rock the bike slightly forwards or backwards. Standing on the pegs with the bars turned makes it easier.

Practise on a flat surface at walking pace, gradually slowing until you can pause for a second or two. Keep your eyes up and stay relaxed. Slow races are a fun way to train it.
