Supermoto (supermotard)

Supermoto is a dirt bike with 17-inch road wheels, sticky tyres and big brakes, and a racing style that mixes tarmac with a dirt section.

Supermoto, also called supermotard or simply sumo, is both a racing discipline and a type of motorcycle. The bikes are based on motocross or enduro machines but fitted with 17-inch wheels, road or slick tyres, a larger front brake disc and firmer, lower suspension.

Races take place on short circuits that are mostly tarmac with an off-road section that may include jumps. Riders slide the rear into corners, often with the inside leg stuck out, and the style is known for aggressive, entertaining racing. Supermoto racing is popular across Europe, including the Baltic and Nordic countries.

Road-legal supermotos are light, agile and fun in towns and on twisty roads. The downsides are a tall seat, small fuel tank, limited comfort and frequent maintenance on competition models.
