Balaclava

A balaclava is a thin hood worn under the helmet for warmth, hygiene and comfort, covering head and neck with an opening for the face.

A balaclava is a close-fitting hood that covers the head and neck, with an opening for the eyes or the face, worn under the helmet. It keeps out cold draughts, protects the helmet lining from sweat and makes a helmet more comfortable, especially a borrowed or rental one.

For cold weather choose merino wool, fleece or windproof membrane versions; for summer, thin moisture-wicking synthetics or silk work best. In the Nordic climate a windproof balaclava or neck tube makes a big difference on early spring and late autumn rides.

Make sure the balaclava is thin enough not to change how the helmet fits, as a helmet that becomes too tight or shifts on your head protects less. Wash it often.
