VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)

The VIN is a unique 17-character code stamped on the frame that identifies a motorcycle; always check it against the papers when buying used.

The VIN, or Vehicle Identification Number, is a unique 17-character code that identifies an individual vehicle. On motorcycles it is usually stamped on the steering head and often also shown on a plate on the frame. The engine normally carries its own separate engine number.

The VIN is built from sections: the first three characters identify the manufacturer, the middle section describes the model and its features, and the last part includes the model year code and serial number. The letters I, O and Q are not used, to avoid confusion with numbers.

When buying a used bike, compare the VIN on the frame with the registration document, check that the stamping has not been tampered with and run the number through the national registry or a history check. Parts catalogues also use the VIN to find correct spares.
