Rally waypoints (WP, WPV, WPM, WPE, WPS, WPC, WPN, WPP)

Rally waypoints are GPS points riders must pass to validate the route; types such as WPV, WPM, WPE and WPS differ in how much GPS guidance you get.

In rally raid, a waypoint (WP) is a GPS point that the organiser's sealed GPS unit records when you pass within its validation radius. Missing one costs time penalties. The roadbook lists every waypoint, and the types differ mainly in how much help the GPS gives:

  • WPV (visible) – full GPS direction and distance shown once the previous waypoint is validated;
  • WPM (masked) – hidden until you are close; navigate there with the roadbook;
  • WPE (eclipse) – guidance appears only after the previous point is validated;
  • WPS (safety) – placed at a danger to force the safe line;
  • WPC (control) – an on-track check proving you followed the roadbook;
  • WPN and WPP – navigation and precise points used in open or demanding sections.

Exact definitions and radii are set in each rally's regulations, so read them before the start.
