Pit lane, pits and pit crew

The pit lane runs beside the track for entering and leaving; the pits are the garages where the pit crew services the bikes.

The pit lane is a road alongside the main straight used to enter and exit the track. A strict speed limit applies, and riders must obey the light or marshal at the exit. Along it are the pits or pit garages, where bikes are prepared and adjusted during practice and, in some series, serviced during the race.

The pit crew is the team of mechanics and helpers supporting a rider: preparing the bike, changing tyres and settings, refuelling where allowed and passing information. In endurance racing, quick and well-rehearsed pit stops for fuel, tyres and rider changes can decide the result.

Behind the pits is the paddock, where transporters and team areas are located. In motocross the equivalent is the mechanics' area by the track.
