Metric cruiser

A metric cruiser is a cruiser built by a non-American maker, mostly Japanese brands, as opposed to Harley-Davidson or Indian.

Metric cruiser is an American term for a cruiser-style motorcycle made by a manufacturer from outside the USA, typically Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki or Kawasaki. The name comes from the fact that these bikes use metric fasteners, while traditional American machines were long built with imperial (inch) sizes.

In everyday use the term says nothing about engine size or style: it simply separates Japanese and European cruisers from Harley-Davidson and Indian models. Metric cruisers are often seen as better value, with liquid cooling, shaft drive and low maintenance needs common.

When buying parts or tools, metric fasteners are what you will find on almost every modern motorcycle anyway, so the label matters mostly in US marketing.
