Lapper (Lap Traffic)

A lapper is a rider a full lap behind the leaders; lap traffic is the slower riders the leaders must pass.

A lapper is a rider who has fallen a full lap or more behind the race leaders. When the leaders catch up with these slower riders, they have to work through lap traffic, which can cost time and decide close races, especially on narrow motocross and enduro tracks.

Marshals show a blue flag to warn a rider that a faster rider is about to lap them. The lapped rider should hold a predictable line and let the faster rider through without blocking, rather than swerving suddenly out of the way.

For the leader, passing lappers safely means reading their lines early, choosing a clear spot such as a corner exit or alternative line, and avoiding contact.
