Dirt Bike

A dirt bike is a light off-road motorcycle with long-travel suspension and knobbly tyres; motocross models are not road legal, enduros can be.

Dirt bike is a broad name for motorcycles built for riding on dirt: motocross, enduro, trail and trials bikes, and pit bikes. They are light, with long-travel suspension, high ground clearance, narrow seats and knobbly tyres.

Motocross bikes are pure competition machines with no lights or registration and may only be ridden on tracks or private land with permission. Enduro and dual-sport models can be registered for road use when they meet the rules and have lights, mirrors and a number plate.

When choosing, think about where you will ride: a track, forest trails or both. Beginners and young riders often start with a smaller-displacement four-stroke or a pit bike, which is easier to control.
