Motorcycle lifting technique

How to lift a fallen motorcycle with your legs and body position rather than your back, to avoid injury.

Every rider drops a bike sometimes, and a heavy touring or adventure bike can weigh well over 200 kg. The right lifting technique uses leg strength and leverage instead of arm and back strength.

  • Switch off the engine, put the bike in gear and, if it is lying on its right side, fold down the side stand first.
  • Turn the handlebar fully towards the ground side (or away, depending on which side you lift from).
  • Back up against the seat, squat low, hold the handlebar grip and a solid part such as the rear frame or grab rail.
  • Keep your back straight and walk the bike up with small steps, pushing with your legs.

On sand or a slope, dig a footing or turn the bike so the wheels point downhill first. Before riding off, check levers, controls and for fuel or oil leaks.
