Hand Signals

Hand signals are gestures motorcyclists use to communicate in group rides, such as warning of hazards or stopping for fuel.

Hand signals are simple gestures riders use to talk to each other without intercoms, especially when riding in a group. Common signals include pointing to a hazard on the road, patting the helmet for police ahead, tapping the tank for fuel and holding out a flat hand to slow down.

There is no single legally defined set for motorcyclists, so signals vary between countries and clubs. The basics, such as pointing at hazards and indicating a stop, are widely understood.

Before a group ride, the leader should agree the signals with everyone. Give signals only when it is safe to take a hand off the bars, and keep using the bike's indicators for turns in traffic.
