Attack Position (Standing Position)

The attack position is the ready stance for riding off-road standing up: knees bent, grip with the legs, light hands, eyes up.

The attack position is the standing posture used on enduro, motocross and adventure bikes when the terrain gets difficult. Standing lowers the combined centre of gravity onto the footpegs and lets your legs work as extra suspension.

  • Balls of the feet on the pegs, knees and ankles gripping the bike.
  • Knees and hips bent, back fairly flat, head over the bars.
  • Elbows up and out, light grip on the handlebar.
  • Eyes looking well ahead, not at the front wheel.

From this neutral stance you shift weight back for climbs and drops and forward for corners and acceleration. If your arms are carrying your weight, you are too far back or too tense. Raising the bars or fitting wider pegs can make the position easier on adventure bikes.
