Dune Crest and False Crest

The dune crest is the top ridge of a sand dune; a false crest only looks like the top and hides more climb or a drop behind it.

The crest is the highest edge of a dune where the windward slope meets the steep lee side. Many dunes have a soft, overhanging lip on top and a sharp drop behind, so you often can't see what lies beyond until you are on it.

A false crest is a rise that looks like the summit but hides more slope or another ridge. The same happens on hill climbs and forest trails, not only in sand.

  • Approach blind crests at an angle and with just enough speed to reach the top.
  • Ease off just before the crest so the front can drop over gently.
  • If unsure, stop short and walk up to look.
