Cowl / Cowling

A cowl or cowling is a bodywork panel covering part of the bike, such as a headlight cowl or seat cowl, for looks, protection or aerodynamics.

A cowl or cowling is a piece of bodywork that covers part of a motorcycle. Common examples are the headlight cowl (a small fairing around the headlight and instruments), the seat cowl that replaces the passenger seat on sports bikes, and the belly pan or lower cowl under the engine.

Cowlings hide wiring and other parts, give the bike a cleaner look, deflect some wind from the rider and can improve aerodynamics. A full set of panels covering the front and sides is usually called a fairing.

Most cowlings are made of ABS plastic, fibreglass or carbon fibre and are held by bolts, clips and rubber grommets. When refitting, don't overtighten bolts, as plastic tabs crack easily, and replace worn rubber grommets to prevent rattles.
