Sidestand (kickstand)

The sidestand is the fold-out leg on the left side that holds a parked bike; most bikes have a switch that stops the engine if you ride off with it down.

The sidestand, also called a kickstand or jiffy stand, is a folding leg on the left side of the motorcycle that supports it at rest. It holds the bike leaning slightly to the left, so park on firm ground and preferably with the bike facing slightly uphill or in gear.

Most modern bikes have a sidestand switch that prevents starting in gear, or stops the engine if a gear is selected with the stand down. A dirty or broken switch is a common cause of mysterious cut-outs.

On soft ground, grass or hot tarmac, put a puck or flat plate under the stand. Check the spring and pivot bolt regularly and keep them lightly greased.
