Backing It In

Backing it in means letting the rear wheel slide sideways under braking into a corner, a road racing and supermoto technique.

Backing it in is a racing technique where the rear wheel steps out sideways while braking hard into a corner. The bike enters slightly sideways, which helps it turn and lets the rider brake later. It is typical of supermoto and is also used in road racing.

The slide is controlled with the rear brake, engine braking and the clutch, while most of the stopping is done by the front brake. Modern bikes use a slipper clutch so the rear wheel does not hop when downshifting. Unlike a crude rear lock-up, the wheel usually keeps turning slowly.

This is a track and practice skill, not one for public roads. Learn it gradually on a supermoto track or in a training course, on a bike with good tyres and suitable gearing.
