WOT (wide open throttle)

WOT, wide open throttle, means the throttle fully open: the engine makes maximum power for its current revs. Used in testing and tuning.

WOT stands for wide open throttle: the twist grip turned fully so the throttle valve or carburettor slide is completely open. At WOT the engine produces the most power it can at its current engine speed.

The term is used in dyno testing, fuel mapping and carburettor tuning. On carburettors, the main jet mainly controls fuelling from roughly three-quarters to full throttle, while the needle and pilot circuits affect lower openings. Fuel-injected bikes have separate fuel and ignition maps for WOT.

On the road, full throttle in low gears can lift the front wheel or spin the rear on a powerful bike, so traction control and wheelie control often intervene. The cruder slang version is WFO.
