Burnout

A burnout is spinning the rear tyre on the spot while holding the front brake, producing smoke. Used in drag racing and for show.

A burnout means spinning the rear wheel while the bike is held stationary with the front brake, so the tyre heats up, smokes and wears rapidly. The term is used in the same form in many languages.

In drag racing, riders do a short burnout before the start to heat and clean the rear tyre for more grip. Everywhere else it is mainly a show trick at stunt displays and bike events.

A burnout is very hard on the rear tyre, clutch and engine, and can overheat the engine if held long. The bike can also shoot forward or sideways if the front brake slips. On public roads it is illegal in most places. If you try it at an organised event, use a solid surface and a bike you know, keep it short and check the tyre and clutch afterwards.
