Switchback

A switchback is a sharp hairpin bend on a road or trail zig-zagging up or down a steep slope.

A switchback is a tight hairpin turn, usually one of a series that zig-zags up or down a steep hillside or mountain. Switchbacks are typical of Alpine passes and mountain trails, and riding them well is a key skill on European motorcycle tours.

On the road, slow down before the turn, look through the bend to the exit, use the outside of the lane for a wider entry if traffic allows, and keep a steady throttle. On uphill hairpins on the inside the gradient is steepest, so a wider line is often easier. On downhill switchbacks, use engine braking and both brakes gently before turning.

Off-road, tight switchbacks may need the clutch, rear brake and a foot down, or a pivot turn. Watch for gravel on the inside of the bend.
