Off-road bike

An off-road bike is a motorcycle built for unpaved terrain: gravel, forest trails, sand, mud and rocks.

Off-road means any terrain that is not paved: gravel and forest roads, trails, sand, mud, rocks and tracks. An off-road bike is built for it, with long-travel suspension, high ground clearance, knobbly tyres, a large front wheel (usually 21 inches) and light weight.

The main types are motocross bikes for closed tracks, enduro bikes for long trail and competition riding (often road registrable), trial bikes for obstacle sections, and dual-sport and adventure bikes that mix road and off-road use. Children's models and pit bikes are entry points for the youngest riders.

Off-road riding needs proper protective gear and regular maintenance: air filter, chain, tyres and suspension bearings wear faster in dirt. Check local rules on where riding is allowed: in Estonia and the Nordic countries riding in forests and on private land requires permission.
