Odometer

The odometer records the total distance a motorcycle has travelled; trip meters show distance over shorter, resettable stretches.

The odometer is the part of the instrument cluster that counts total distance travelled, in kilometres in Europe. Most bikes also have one or two resettable trip meters for fuel range or navigation. Older bikes use a cable drive from the front wheel or gearbox; modern ones read a wheel-speed or gearbox sensor electronically.

Mileage sets service intervals for oil, valves, chain and tyres, and is a key value when buying a used bike. Check that the reading fits the bike's condition and service records.

If the speedometer and odometer stop together, suspect a broken cable, a failed drive gear at the wheel or a faulty sensor. Changing tyre size or sprockets on some bikes also changes the reading.
