Grid (Starting Grid)

The grid is the set of marked starting positions where riders line up before a road race.

The grid or starting grid is the pattern of marked boxes at the start line of a circuit where riders line up before a race. Positions are usually decided by qualifying times, with the fastest rider on pole position at the front.

In circuit racing, rows typically hold three or four bikes and are staggered so each rider has a clear view forward. Off-road racing uses a start gate instead, with riders choosing their gate position in qualifying order.

Before the start there is normally a warm-up or sighting lap, after which riders take their grid positions and wait for the start lights. Stalling on the grid is dangerous, so practise clean launches beforehand.
