Dynamic Balance

Dynamic balance is keeping the motorcycle stable while it moves, using steering, throttle, body position and smooth inputs together.

A moving motorcycle balances itself largely through steering geometry and the gyroscopic effect of the wheels, but the rider constantly makes small corrections. Dynamic balance is the skill of combining steering, throttle, braking and body position so that the bike stays stable at any speed.

It matters most at low speed, where the bike is least self-stabilising: U-turns, walking-pace traffic and technical off-road sections. Riders who grip the bars tightly and look down usually struggle.

  • Look ahead to where you want to go, not at the front wheel.
  • Keep arms relaxed and control the bike with your knees and feet.
  • At low speed, use slight rear brake and a steady throttle with the clutch in the friction zone.
