Motorcycle Ergonomics

Ergonomics is how well a motorcycle fits its rider: the position of seat, bars and footpegs and how easily the controls can be reached.

Motorcycle ergonomics describes the relationship between rider and machine: seat height, the distance from seat to handlebars and footpegs, bar width and angle, lever reach and where the instruments sit. Together these decide your riding position – upright, leaning forward or feet forward – and how comfortable and in control you feel.

Poor ergonomics causes sore wrists, back or knees, faster fatigue and less precise control. Good ergonomics depends on the rider: a bike that fits a tall rider may be too high for a short one.

Adjustments include lowered or raised seats, handlebar risers or different bars, adjustable levers and footpeg relocation kits. Sit on a bike and reach all controls before buying, and if you can, take a longer test ride.
