Dune riding

Dune riding means crossing sand dunes: read ripples and slip faces, ride crests carefully and never drop blind over the top.

Dune riding is riding over sand dunes, found in rally raids and in sandy areas such as coastal dunes and desert travel. It needs the same momentum as other sand riding, plus the ability to read the terrain.

The slip face is the steep downwind side of a dune where sand has slid down; it can drop suddenly and steeply, so approach a crest slowly enough to see what lies beyond. Ridge riding along a crest needs precise line choice, as a mistake can send the bike down the steep side. Sand ripples, small regular ridges formed by wind, show wind direction and help predict which side is the slip face.

Ride only where it is allowed: in many European countries, including the Baltic and Nordic states, coastal dunes are protected and closed to vehicles.
