Rally Roadbook Abbreviations (DSS, DN/FN, DT/FT, DZ/FZ, D/G)

The French abbreviations used in rally-raid roadbooks: stage start DSS, neutralisation DN/FN, transfer DT/FT, speed zones DZ/FZ and D/G for right/left.

Rally-raid grew up in French-speaking events such as the Dakar, so roadbooks still use French abbreviations, even at small national navigation rallies.

  • DSS / ASS – Départ / Arrivée Secteur Sélectif: start and finish of the timed special stage.
  • DT / FT – Début / Fin de Transfert: a liaison section that does not count toward the stage time.
  • DN / FN – Début / Fin de Neutralisation: a neutralised zone inside the stage where the clock is effectively stopped.
  • DZ / FZ – Début / Fin de Zone: a speed-limited zone, usually through a village. The GPS logs your speed and exceeding the limit is penalised.
  • D / G – Droite / Gauche: right and left in the notes.

Read the event regulations before the start: speed limits and penalties in DZ zones differ between rallies.
