Dragging Pegs (Footpeg Scraping)

Dragging pegs means the footpegs touch the road in a corner because of lean angle; a warning that ground clearance is almost used up.

When a bike leans far enough in a corner, the footpegs (or floorboards, stands or exhaust on cruisers) scrape the tarmac. Many footpegs have a small feeler or hero blob on the underside that touches first as a warning.

Scraping is not dangerous in itself, but if a solid part such as a stand or exhaust lifts the tyre off the road, grip can be lost suddenly. Cruisers and loaded touring bikes reach this point much earlier than sport bikes.

  • Hang off slightly – moving your body to the inside lets the bike lean less for the same speed.
  • Check sag and preload: a sagging rear with a passenger and luggage reduces clearance.
  • Replace worn feelers so you still get the early warning.
