Cresting (Hill or Dune Crest)

Cresting is riding over the top of a hill or dune while controlling speed and body position, since you can't see what lies beyond the crest.

Cresting is the technique of riding over the top of a hill, dune or steep bank. The challenge is that you can't see what is on the other side: a sharp drop, a hole, a rock or another rider could be waiting just past the crest.

Good technique is to climb with enough momentum, then ease off the throttle just before the top so the front wheel stays down and the bike doesn't fly over. Stand on the pegs with weight slightly forward as you crest, then shift your weight back for the descent. On sand dunes, the leeward side is often a steep slip face, so approach dune crests at an angle and slowly.

When riding in a group, never stop just below or on a blind crest, and use a flag or spotter where needed. If you don't know the terrain, walk up and look first.
