Handguards (Barkbusters)

Handguards protect hands and levers from branches, roost and crashes. Open roost deflectors vs wraparound guards like Barkbusters.

Handguards are shields mounted on the handlebar in front of the grips. They protect the rider's hands from branches, stones and roost, keep wind and rain off in cold weather, and protect brake and clutch levers in a fall. Barkbusters is a well-known brand whose name is often used for the whole category.

  • Open roost deflectors are plastic shields mounted only at the bar end or clamp; light, common in motocross, but they give little crash protection.
  • Wraparound guards have an aluminium or steel backbone fixed at both the clamp and the bar end, protecting levers in a crash; standard for enduro and adventure.

When fitting wraparound guards, leave enough space so the levers and throttle work freely at full lock. Check the mounting bolts regularly, and note that some fit only tapered or hollow bars.
