Black Ice

Black ice is a thin, transparent layer of ice on the road that is almost invisible and extremely slippery.

Black ice is a thin, clear layer of ice that forms on the road surface. Because it is transparent, the road beneath looks merely wet or dark, so it is very hard to spot. For a motorcycle it means almost no grip at all.

It forms most often when the air is around or just below 0 °C, especially in the morning and evening, after rain or fog, and in cold spots: on bridges, in shaded sections, in dips, near water and in forest. In the Nordic and Baltic countries the risk is high in early spring and late autumn even when daytime temperatures seem mild.

Check the forecast and road temperature before riding. If you suspect ice, ride upright and smoothly with no sudden braking, throttle or steering, and avoid shaded corners. When in doubt, leave the bike at home.
