Ape Hangers

Ape hangers are very tall custom handlebars that put the rider's hands at or above shoulder height, popular on choppers.

Ape hangers are tall handlebars that place the grips at or above the rider's shoulders. The nickname comes from the arms-up posture, which looks a little like an ape hanging from a branch. They are a classic part of chopper and custom cruiser style.

Fitting taller bars usually means longer brake and clutch lines, throttle cables and wiring, so it is more than a bolt-on job. The riding position looks dramatic but tires the arms and shoulders on long rides and reduces leverage for quick steering.

Many countries have rules on maximum handlebar height or grip position, and changes may need approval at inspection. Check your local regulations before buying.
