Trials (motorcycle trials)

Trials is a sport of riding over obstacles without putting a foot down, on very light bikes with low gearing and almost no seat.

Trials is a motorcycle sport where riders tackle marked sections full of rocks, logs, steep steps and streams. The aim is to get through without putting a foot on the ground (a 'dab'), stopping or falling. Each mistake earns penalty points, and the rider with the fewest points wins. Speed matters only within the time limit.

A trials bike is very light, has a small two-stroke or four-stroke engine with smooth low-rev power, short gearing, a large steering lock, high ground clearance and soft, low-pressure tyres. There is practically no seat, as the rider stands all the time.

Trials techniques such as the double blip and zap are also valuable for hard enduro and everyday trail riding, as they build balance and clutch control.
