Roadbook Tulip Symbols (Entry Ball, Exit Arrow, CAP)

How to read a rally roadbook tulip: the entry ball shows where you arrive, the arrow where to leave, CAP the compass heading, dashes open terrain.

A tulip is the small diagram in each roadbook box that shows a junction or landmark from above. You always read it as if riding up the page.

  • Entry ball – the dot at the bottom of the drawing marks the direction you arrive from.
  • Exit arrow – the arrowhead shows which track to take out of the junction.
  • Exit CAP – the compass heading in degrees to follow after the junction (CAP is French for heading).
  • Solid vs dashed lines – a solid line is a clear track; a dashed line means open terrain without a made track, where you ride on the CAP heading.

When the terrain doesn't match the drawing, check the distance and the heading before turning: a wrong exit is the most common navigation mistake.
